  1. German fascist political party. The name is
  2. derived from the full name,
  3. Nationalsozialistiche Deutsche Arbeiterpartei
  4. (National Socialist German Workers' Party).
  5. It was formed from the German Workers' Party
  6. (founded 1919), and led by Adolf Hitler
  7. 1921-45. The ideology was based on racism,
  8. nationalism, and the supremacy of the state
  9. over the individual. During the 1930s, many
  10. similar parties were created throughout
  11. Europe, although only those of Austria and
  12. Sudetenland were of any major importance.
  13. These parties collaborated with the German
  14. occupation of Europe 1939-45. After the Nazi
  15. atrocities of World War II (see SS,
  16. concentration camp), the party was banned in
  17. Germany, but there are parties with Nazi or
  18. neo-Nazi ideologies in many countries.
